Review of the Mossberg 930 SPX

In my search for a home defense (HD) shotgun I have evaluated a Remington 870 Magnum, Mossberg 500 Mariner, Mossberg 590A1, and the Mossberg 930 SPX. I think the 930 SPX to the range this weekend and ran 250 rounds(225 low brass game loads, 15 00 Buck, 10 Slugs) through it. The 930 SPX is a serious contender to be my go to HD shotgun going forward. It has lots of features I want on a home defense shotgun, and provides a LOT of fire power..

Features:
Stock - Adjustable angle and length by adding shims provided with the gun, synthetic, swivel attachment points, pistol grip, checkered on the pistol grip and fore end.
Receiver -  Matte finish, picatinny rail, safety, trigger guard is large enough to accommodate gloves.
Sights - Ghost Ring rear, adjustable, M4 style, fiber optic front, hooded, Ghost Ring rear is removable from rail.
Controls - Trigger is crisp, cocked hammer indicator, safety is easy to see and use, charging handle is easy to operate even with gloves on.
Capacity - 8 shot with 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells (3 more rounds than the Benelli M4).

Performance:
Shooting this shotgun is a lot of fun. It cycles VERY fast, faster than I can pull the trigger. The 930 SPX points well and is comfortable in my hands. The forend stock is not bulky and provides a sure grip. As is the case with all Mossbergs, the controls are well placed and easy to use. The sights are easy to acquire in most lighting conditions. If you have any experience with the AR-15 platform, the rear sight on the 930 SPX will be very familiar to you. The trigger pull is crisp without a lot of travel.  Loading the weapon, or reloading, can be a little cumbersome if you do not have something to rest the barrel on as the weapon weighs in at almost 8 pounds. It can be barrel heavy if you try to hold the weapon one handed by the pistol grip and load with the other hand.
I managed to create a jam while loading by not completely inserting the round into the feed tube. I didn't seat it completely and the magazine spring pushed it into the space under the bolt, which prevented me from inserting another shell until I cycled the action to eject the shell loaded int the chamber, and load the shell that popped out of the mag tube. This was an error on my part, and something I'll have to address through training. I believe the 930 SPX can be ghost loaded, however I did not try it personally.

Value:
This shotgun is a great buy for the money. I paid about $630 for mine, out the door. That's about $100 over half the cost of a FN SLP and a third of the cost of a Benelli M4 (depending on configuration). There are lots of accessories available for the 930 SPX, some of which I plan to get....some I don't. Mossbergs customer service is one of the best in the firearms industry, and their quality is very high.

Field stripping:
Field stripping the 930 SPX is pretty easy. Simply remove the magazine tube extension by unscrewing it. Be careful when you remove the mag extension as the mag spring is VERY long and will fly out. It can be somewhat of a PITA (Pain In The Ass) to reinstall but it's not difficult, just somewhat frustrating. Then remove the hand guard, barrel, piston, and then the bolt. You can remove the trigger group by punching out the pins holding it in place if you want. I never have. I have learned that if you want to remove the trigger group, make sure the hammer is back before you remove trigger group or parts will fly out. There are a couple of videos on You Tube detailing how to break the 930 SPX down, I highly recommend watching them.

Going forward:
Overall this is a great shotgun for the price. It's comfortable to shoot, versatile, easily maintained, and customizable. I highly recommend this weapon to someone who is in the market for a home defense shotgun. I plan on adding a sling, and a mag tube clamp with mini-picatinny rail. I'm not an expert and I don't play one on the Internet. Please comment with your own experiences with this shotgun, you can do so anonymously if you wish.

     As always, thanks for reading.

  1. I have to agree. I have owned mine for over a year and it is my go to shotgun. No problems, awesome function.

  2. Thanks for the review. Which did you like better, the Blackwater 590A1 or the 930 SPX?
    Thanks.

  3. I'm still relying on the 590A1 as my primary long gun for home defense. I haven't put enough rounds through the 930 yet to be completely comfortable with its reliability. My round count is aroun d 400 - 500, once I get it up over 1K I'll probably make the switch. Both are fantastic shotguns.

  4. has anyone found a cannister or banana clip to attach to the 930SPX like the ones for the Saiga 12's? Having a 20rd cannister might be a little heavy but you could keep a good number of bad guys away with that.

    2. I hope you are joking. If not, you should get rid of every gun that you own now.

  5. Great Review! I own one and bought my brother in law one as a redeployment gift. We both love it. I personally like it better than my 870 express tactical. Some early versions had canted sights. Mossberg have worked out the bugs. I'd say I'd someone was looking for one to make sure they get one with the round charging handle (new generation models have this). I have zero reliability issues with mine. Also, a great function that this has is that you can extract the shells from the loading port. It's competitors do not have this function. The 930 SPX is worth the money. I paid $500 for a floor model at Cabela's. I did have to do a really deep cleaning because of the packing oil/grease that Mossberg uses to ship the weapon.

  6. I own one of these shotguns and I would not recomend it. Mine has been fired less than 250 times and the stock and pistol grip broke in two while firing the gun. Very dangerous as I almost shot myself. When the stock broke my finger was on the trigger, with a new round loaded, and the barrel came back and almost hit me in the face. After inspecting the damage I realized that all that holds the gun together was a very thin threaded tube. The threads sheared off causing the gun to break in two. Very cheaply made, and very disappointing from mossberg.

  7. I took my 930SPX for it first shoot today. I ran about 100 rounds of junk (cheap) ammo from different makers. Also ran about a 100 rounds of Federal ranging from #7.5 to 00. The gun worked perfect. High quality or cheap rounds, light or heavy loads, it did not matter. I took my slightly built 19 year old daughter on her first shoot. She had no trouble controlling the weapon. For a young woman on her first shoot I would not want to be down range of her. She liked shooting the 930 much more than shooting my Mossberg 500. The 930 will now be my primary HD gun.

  8. I just ordered a 930 SPX with collapsable stock & picatinny rial to facilitate a fore grip/light. Other than a slug, what shell would you recommend I use as a backup to protect against bear, or BIG cats?? I can't freak'n wait to get it! Like a kid on Christmas eve!!!!

  11. Jahoosafatz - I like Winchester PDX-1 rounds for close range critical stops. Basically it's 3 00-buck pellets nested on top of a 1 ounce slug. The shells are 2 3/4 length, and are colored a distinctive black hull on black tinted brass.

  12. Ordered online through Gallery of guns, sent to local dealer, inspected gun and found the bolt and inside the action it clutter with what looked like dirty grease, like it was dragged through the mud. Refused delivery, dealer sent it back, waited another few weeks till they showed stock, had a second sent to dealer, it came in with the same condition. Best I could tell this was normal and accepted gun. Contacted Mossberg and sent pictures, after review they sent me a call tag for return. They indicated they replaced the bolt and sent it back, expecting delivery in the next few days. Who know!!! ... someone above indicated they are getting one with a "collapsable stock" I have not heard or see anything about that.. anyone have information about it.

  13. I have a Mesa Tactical side saddle, and mag tube clamp w/ rail on mine. I wasn't aware of anyone making a collabsible stock for the 930. I might be wrong, but I think the recoil spring goes back into the stock. Lotsd of people have ewxpressed interest in either a folder or collabsible stock.

  14. Overall review of this Gun is nice, but there is nothing perfect in this world.

  15. A search for information on the 930 brought me to this blog. I have since purchased the 18" door breacher model. Didn't care about the breacher but the gun was a real bargain so I took it.
I could not be happier with this gun. It has eaten ~500 #8 cheapo shells without a misfire. Handled several 3" slug loads just as well.
    It's a keeper. It's for home defense.

  16. The 930 spx does take saiga pro mags in 10 and 20rnd

    ReplyDelete
  17. I've never heard that. Can you provide a reference?

    ReplyDelete
  18. 2 things... How on earth can the 930 SPX accept Magazines? The follower would get in the way, there is not mag release engineered in to either release or hold the mag, etc etc. IF there is a way to modify the SPX so that it can take magazines, please provide reference/link. That would be interesting.

Also... Where are people getting collapsible stocks? I know it's possible to put a coll. stock on a semi auto shotgun, but I haven't been able to find anything for the 930spx. Anyone have any info?

    Nice review by the way.

  38. Good review, I recently bought the 930 SPX and have not had a single problem with with approx 800 rnds of various loads and brands; it's ate everything without a problem. Lack of a good sling mount system is a bummer.
It's a shame that all the SCABS come on here without any subjuct knowledge what so ever just to advertise their blog sites. Truth be told they're probably anti-gun too!
